Xi Jinping Praises HKSAR Government’s Work in Beijing Meeting

President Xi Jinping met with Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive John Lee in Beijing on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, to discuss governance priorities and regional stability. The meeting marked Lee’s first duty visit to the capital this year, during which he presented a comprehensive report on Hong Kong’s socioeconomic progress and policy initiatives.

Xi affirmed the central government’s full support for the HKSAR administration, stating it had 'safeguarded national security while maintaining Hong Kong’s prosperity' amid global economic uncertainties. The president emphasized Beijing’s commitment to the 'one country, two systems' framework, calling it 'the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s long-term success.'

Lee’s report highlighted efforts to strengthen financial sector resilience and expand cross-border technology partnerships with the Chinese mainland. The discussions coincided with preparations for the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China in July 2026, with both leaders underscoring the region’s strategic role in Asia’s economic integration.

Analysts suggest the meeting reinforces confidence among overseas investors, particularly in Hong Kong’s fintech and green energy sectors. The city remains a critical hub for international businesses seeking access to Asian markets, with its GDP growth forecast to outpace 2024 levels.
