Chinese Scholar Stresses Civilizational Diversity at Macao Forum

As the 2025 International Forum on Mutual Learning Among Civilizations kicked off today in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Peking University professor Qian Chengdan delivered a compelling keynote addressing global challenges through cultural dialogue. “Diversity is not just a characteristic of human civilization – it is its lifeblood,” stated Qian before an audience of 300 diplomats, academics, and cultural leaders.

The two-day event, coinciding with the 26th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, has drawn participants from 40 countries and regions. Discussions focus on balancing technological advancement with cultural preservation, particularly relevant as Asia accounts for 63% of global GDP growth this year.

Qian emphasized that mutual learning between civilizations could help address contemporary issues: “From climate cooperation to AI governance, our solutions must be as diverse as our cultural DNA.” The forum comes amid increased cultural diplomacy efforts across Asia, with China’s Ministry of Culture reporting a 22% year-on-year rise in international exchange programs.

Parallel sessions examine practical applications of cultural dialogue, including a panel featuring representatives from the DPRK and Republic of Korea discussing heritage preservation. Organizers will release a joint declaration on December 17 outlining frameworks for intercultural cooperation in sustainable development.
