China Condemns Foreign Criticism of Hong Kong Judicial Ruling

China has firmly rejected international criticism of Hong Kong's judicial system following the High Court verdict in Jimmy Lai's case, reaffirming its commitment to the "one country, two systems" principle. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated Monday that Beijing "deplores and firmly opposes certain countries' groundless accusations" regarding the Special Administrative Region's legal processes.

The remarks came after Britain and other nations questioned Hong Kong's judicial independence following Lai's conviction for fraud-related charges. Guo emphasized that Hong Kong residents enjoy rights protected by law, stating: "The SAR government lawfully safeguards national security while protecting legitimate rights and freedoms – these are not contradictory objectives."

Analysts note the case has become a focal point in cross-strait relations, with Beijing maintaining that foreign governments should respect China's internal affairs. The Chinese mainland authorities have consistently supported Hong Kong's efforts to uphold the rule of law while preserving its unique status as an international financial hub.
