Venezuelan Oil Tanker Seized by US Heads to Houston Amid Tensions

Satellite imagery confirmed on December 13 that a Venezuelan-flagged ultra-large crude carrier, seized by U.S. forces near Venezuela earlier this week, is currently navigating the Caribbean Sea toward Houston. The vessel reportedly carries 1.85 million barrels of heavy crude oil – a cargo valued at over $150 million at current prices.

Logistical challenges loom as the tanker’s size prevents direct entry into Houston’s port, requiring offshore cargo transfers to smaller ships. The White House reiterated its intent to confiscate the shipment under sanctions enforcement, while Venezuela’s government condemned the move as "a brazen act of international piracy" during a press conference in Caracas on Thursday.

This incident occurs amid heightened regional tensions following recent U.S. sanctions targeting Venezuela’s energy sector. Market analysts suggest the seizure could temporarily tighten global heavy crude supplies, particularly affecting Asian refineries that process similar grades from Middle Eastern producers.
