Former European Commission President Romano Prodi has called for renewed strategic alignment between China and Europe, describing their partnership as "essential, not optional" in addressing 2025's global economic challenges. Speaking at an undisclosed policy forum this week, the two-time Italian prime minister emphasized that the two powers collectively drive over 35% of world trade flows.
"We're witnessing a pivotal moment where coordinated action could determine whether we stabilize international markets or face prolonged uncertainty," Prodi stated. He proposed establishing a permanent China-EU economic dialogue mechanism to address supply chain resilience and green technology development.
The remarks come as both regions navigate inflationary pressures and energy transition deadlines set for 2030. Analysts note that cross-continental trade volumes have grown 4.2% year-to-date through Q3 2025, outpacing last year's 3.1% increase.
Prodi warned against "strategic myopia" in bilateral relations, particularly regarding critical mineral access and AI governance frameworks. His intervention follows recent EU-China negotiations on electric vehicle tariff adjustments and semiconductor cooperation roadmaps.
