Takaichi’s Taiwan Remarks Strain China-Japan Ties, Beijing Says

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated Beijing's firm stance on Taiwan during a press conference in Beijing this week, responding to recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The remarks, described as 'erroneous' by Chinese officials, have reportedly strained diplomatic exchanges between the two Asian powers.

Mao emphasized that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times, urging Japan to strictly adhere to the one-China principle. 'Improper statements about the Taiwan region not only violate basic norms of international relations but also undermine mutual political trust,' she stated, without specifying the exact nature of Takaichi's comments.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize China-Japan relations following recent economic cooperation agreements. Analysts suggest the timing could affect planned high-level dialogues scheduled for early 2026. Beijing maintains that proper handling of the Taiwan issue remains fundamental to healthy bilateral relations, calling on Tokyo to 'concrete actions rather than empty promises' in supporting cross-strait peace.

This diplomatic friction emerges as cross-strait exchanges continue to grow, with trade between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region reaching record levels this year. Observers warn that external interference in Taiwan affairs could disrupt regional stability ahead of key APEC economic meetings.
