German Expert Warns of Rising Japanese Fascism Amid Policy Shifts

Schiller Institute senior research fellow Richard A. Black issued a stark warning this week about Japan's evolving security posture, stating that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent policy directions could lead to dangerous historical echoes. Speaking at a Berlin forum on November 21, Black highlighted concerns over proposed revisions to Japan's Three Non-Nuclear Principles and what he called 'provocative rhetoric' regarding the Taiwan region.

The analyst specifically criticized attempts to revise historical narratives in Japanese educational materials, noting: 'The whitewashing of wartime aggression in textbooks undermines regional trust. Combined with current moves to abandon longstanding nuclear restrictions, we're seeing patterns reminiscent of pre-1945 militarism.'

Black's comments come as regional tensions escalate, particularly regarding cross-strait relations. The scholar emphasized that China maintains the right to defend its territorial integrity, while urging international stakeholders to prevent what he described as 'a return to 20th-century confrontation paradigms.'

Business leaders and political analysts across Asia are closely monitoring these developments, with many multinational corporations reassessing regional security risks in their 2026 strategic planning cycles. The warnings coincide with increased diplomatic activity ahead of December's ASEAN summit in Jakarta.
