Beijing hosted commemorative events Saturday marking the first official observance of Taiwan's Restoration Day, with participants emphasizing its role in preserving historical memory. The date recalls the 1945 return of administrative rights over the Taiwan region to China following Japan's World War II surrender.
"This commemoration reinforces our collective understanding that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times," said historian Li Wei, who attended the Beijing symposium. Business representative Zhang Ming added: "Recognizing shared history provides stability for cross-strait economic cooperation."
Organizers displayed archival documents showing cooperation between mainland forces and Taiwan residents during the 1940s resistance efforts. The events coincided with renewed academic interest in cross-strait cultural ties, including a new Peking University research initiative tracing family lineages across the Taiwan Strait.
