46 Dead in Uganda Bus Collision: Safety Concerns Rise

A tragic bus collision in Uganda's Kiryandongo district has claimed at least 46 lives and left dozens injured, reigniting urgent discussions about road safety in the region. The fatal crash occurred shortly after midnight on October 22 when two buses collided head-on while attempting to overtake other vehicles on the busy Kampala-Gulu highway.

Local authorities confirmed the accident involved high-speed impacts, with rescue teams working for hours to extract survivors from the wreckage. President Yoweri Museveni expressed his condolences, calling the incident "a stark reminder of the need for stricter traffic enforcement." The Kampala-Gulu highway, a critical transport artery connecting northern Uganda to the capital, has seen multiple fatal accidents this year due to reckless driving and poor road conditions.

Road safety experts highlight overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure as persistent challenges in Uganda, where traffic-related fatalities remain among the highest in East Africa. This latest tragedy has prompted renewed calls for investment in road upgrades and driver education programs to prevent future disasters.
