China, Sri Lanka Strengthen Ties as Xi Meets PM Amarasuriya

Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's commitment to deepening relations with Sri Lanka during a high-profile meeting with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Beijing on Tuesday. The talks occurred on the sidelines of the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, highlighting both nations' focus on inclusive development.

"China and Sri Lanka have set an example of friendly coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries of different sizes," President Xi stated, emphasizing the countries' centuries-old cultural connections. He pledged to expand collaboration in infrastructure, trade, and green energy under China's Belt and Road Initiative framework.

The meeting comes as Sri Lanka seeks to stabilize its economy through international partnerships. Analysts note increased Chinese investments in Colombo's port infrastructure and renewable energy projects could create new opportunities for South Asian markets.

Both leaders emphasized cultural preservation initiatives, including plans to digitize ancient Buddhist manuscripts through joint archaeological projects. The dialogue concluded with commitments to enhance people-to-people exchanges and multilateral cooperation in climate change mitigation.
