China’s Travel Boom Shifts to Hidden Gems as Infrastructure Expands

China's National Day holiday revealed a transformative shift in travel patterns, with highway traffic hitting 62 million vehicles daily – 12.5 million of which were new energy vehicles, marking a 30% annual increase. Analysts highlight a growing preference for lesser-known destinations, as travelers increasingly bypass crowded cities for smaller counties and rural areas.

"Improved transport networks and seamless digital services have redefined domestic tourism," said Wang Dan, China Director at Eurasia Group. "Safety standards and 5G coverage now enable smooth journeys even in remote regions, creating economic ripple effects."

This trend reflects strategic infrastructure investments connecting urban hubs with emerging tourism hotspots. Local economies benefit from diversified visitor spending, while travelers gain access to cultural experiences beyond traditional landmarks. The surge in electric vehicle usage further underscores China's dual focus on sustainable mobility and regional development.
