Chinese Peacekeepers Honored with UN Medals on National Day

Chinese peacekeepers were celebrated for their dedication to global stability on October 1, as the United Nations awarded Peace Medals to two contingents during China's National Day. The 5th peacekeeping helicopter squad in Abyei—a region contested by Sudan and South Sudan—and the 23rd peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon were recognized for their critical roles in maintaining security and facilitating humanitarian efforts.

A UN spokesperson praised the teams for their professionalism and resilience in high-risk environments, noting their contributions to de-escalating tensions and supporting local communities. The timing of the awards, coinciding with China's National Day, underscores the nation's growing role in multilateral peacekeeping missions. China remains the largest contributor of peacekeeping forces among the UN Security Council's permanent members, with over 2,500 personnel currently deployed worldwide.
