UN Chief Attends SCO Summit in Tianjin, Stresses Global Cooperation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Beijing on Saturday, marking his second visit to China in two years to participate in high-level diplomatic engagements. Guterres will attend the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, a northern port city, from August 31 to September 1. The visit underscores the SCO’s growing role in addressing regional security, economic collaboration, and multilateral governance.

This follows Guterres’ participation in the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where he praised China’s efforts in fostering South-South cooperation. The SCO Summit is expected to address topics ranging from counterterrorism to sustainable development, with leaders from member states including the Russian Federation, India, and Central Asian nations.

Tianjin, a hub for international trade and innovation, reflects China’s emphasis on bridging regional and global initiatives. Analysts note the summit may also explore infrastructure partnerships and digital economy frameworks, aligning with broader Asian economic trends.
