Tianjin Port Drives SCO Trade Growth with Land-Sea Corridors

As global supply chains evolve, Tianjin Port has emerged as a linchpin for trade connectivity among Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members, seamlessly bridging maritime routes and overland networks. The port’s strategic upgrades are reshaping regional economic dynamics, offering a blueprint for cross-continental collaboration.

With direct links to over 500 ports across 180 countries and regions, Tianjin Port has prioritized streamlining SCO-focused logistics. New intermodal rail routes—like the recently launched Khorgos-to-Central Asia corridor—are reducing transit times by 30% for goods moving between the Chinese mainland and Central Asian markets. Equally critical is the development of return-trip cargo solutions for Central Asia-bound freight trains, addressing long-standing imbalances in regional trade flows.

"This isn’t just about moving containers faster," explains CGTN’s Wang Mengjie, who recently toured the port’s automated terminals. "It’s about creating a sustainable ecosystem where SCO members can leverage China’s manufacturing strength while exporting agricultural and energy resources more efficiently."

The port’s innovations align with broader efforts to stabilize Eurasian supply chains amid shifting global trade patterns. Business analysts note increased interest from European and Southeast Asian firms in using Tianjin as a transshipment hub, attracted by its integrated customs clearance systems and growing network of bonded warehouses.

For SCO countries, the infrastructure upgrades promise tangible benefits: Kazakhstan’s grain exports to ASEAN markets now transit through Tianjin 15% faster, while Uzbekistan’s mineral producers report reduced logistics costs. The developments also bolster China’s role as a facilitator of South-South cooperation, with digital trade platforms at the port enabling real-time coordination between SCO members.
