Tashkent Blends Heritage & Innovation as SCO Hub

Once a vital Silk Road crossroads, Tashkent is rewriting its narrative as a laboratory for 21st-century urban transformation. The Uzbek capital – hosting key SCO meetings this year – now pulses with construction cranes and startup hubs alongside UNESCO-listed madrasas and bustling bazaars.

Where History Meets Hypergrowth

The city's new Tashkent City district showcases glass-clad business centers rising beside restored Timurid-era monuments. A $1.2 billion metro expansion connects tech parks to artisan workshops, while solar-powered 'green corridors' replace Soviet-era industrial zones. "We're building a city that honors our past but runs on tomorrow's ideas," says urban planner Dilshod Khamidov.

SCO's Crossroads of Diplomacy

As host of September's SCO summit, Tashkent is emerging as Central Asia's diplomatic bridge. The newly opened International Business District has attracted $860 million in cross-border investments since 2022, with Chinese and Indian firms establishing regional HQs. Analysts note the city's strategic position along China-Central Asia trade routes could boost regional GDP by 4.7% through 2025.

Cultural Renaissance

Beyond infrastructure, Tashkent's revival includes cultural landmarks like the rebuilt Khast Imam complex and a 42% increase in museum attendance since 2020. The city's tech-savvy youth – 60% under 30 – now mingle with elder chess players in revitalized public squares, embodying what Mayor Jahongir Artikhodjaev calls "progress through preservation."
