China’s ‘Monkey Kings’: Guardians of the Golden Snub-Nosed Primates

Deep within the misty peaks of Shennongjia National Park, a creature straight from Chinese folklore clings to survival. The golden snub-nosed monkey, with its striking golden fur and human-like expressions, has become a living symbol of China’s biodiversity – and a rallying cry for conservationists battling to protect it.

With fewer than 1,600 remaining in the wild, these endangered primates face habitat loss and climate pressures. CGTN reporter Liu Jiaxin recently trekked through their mountainous habitat, documenting both their playful family dynamics and the urgent efforts to safeguard their future. "Seeing their eyes – so intelligent, so aware – you understand why they’re called the real Monkey Kings," Liu observed during her expedition.

Conservation teams work year-round in Hubei province’s rugged terrain, monitoring populations and restoring forest corridors. Their success could have ripple effects: protecting these monkeys helps preserve entire ecosystems critical for Asia’s environmental health.
