Guatemala initiated emergency evacuations on Thursday as the Volcano of Fire erupted violently, sending thick plumes of ash and scorching gases into the sky. Over 500 residents from five communities in Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepequez were relocated to temporary shelters amid escalating safety concerns.
Michelle Alvarado, acting director of Guatemala's National Disaster Reduction Coordinator, confirmed the evacuations, stating, "Our priority is safeguarding lives as volcanic activity intensifies." The eruption, one of the most significant in recent months, has raised alarms over potential disruptions to local infrastructure and agriculture.
Authorities continue to monitor the volcano, which last caused widespread devastation in 2018. Scientists warn that shifting wind patterns could spread ash across neighboring regions, affecting air quality and transportation.
