Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined an ambitious vision for strengthened cooperation between China and Latin America during the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum in Beijing on Tuesday. Addressing representatives from 33 countries and regions, Xi emphasized creating a “community of shared future” through deepened economic ties, sustainable development initiatives, and technological collaboration.
The proposal positions China as a strategic partner for CELAC members in renewable energy projects and digital transformation programs. Analysts suggest this could create new trade corridors and supply chain opportunities for Asia-focused investors, particularly in lithium mining and green infrastructure sectors.
Xi highlighted existing progress, noting China has become Latin America’s second-largest trading partner with bilateral trade exceeding $450 billion in 2023. Cultural exchanges and climate change cooperation were also identified as key pillars of the partnership framework.
The forum concluded with agreements to establish new multilateral working groups on food security and pandemic preparedness, underscoring Beijing’s focus on long-term strategic alignment with the Global South.
