China’s Icebreaker Xue Long Concludes Historic Antarctic Mission

China’s icebreaker Xue Long docked in Shanghai on Tuesday, marking the end of a 159-day Antarctic expedition that covered over 27,000 nautical miles through some of the planet’s most extreme maritime conditions. The 41st Antarctic Expedition team – comprising 516 scientists, crew, and support staff from 118 domestic and international institutions – conducted critical climate research and tested China’s advanced three-ship coordinated logistics system for polar operations.

The mission, China’s second such endeavor using trio-vessel coordination, focused on studying Antarctic ecosystems, atmospheric changes, and glacial dynamics. Researchers collected data expected to enhance global understanding of climate feedback mechanisms and marine biodiversity. “This expedition underscores China’s commitment to peaceful polar research and international scientific cooperation,” noted a project spokesperson.

The Xue Long (“Snow Dragon”), capable of breaking 1.2-meter-thick ice at continuous speeds, has become a symbol of China’s growing capabilities in polar exploration. The expedition’s return coincides with increased global attention on Antarctic governance and resource management as climate impacts accelerate.
