WFP Warns: Funding Gaps Imperil Myanmar’s Recovery

Myanmar's humanitarian crisis has intensified as international rescue teams, including personnel from the Chinese mainland, work tirelessly to address devastating aftermath. In an exclusive interview with KhabarAsia, World Food Programme (WFP) Myanmar Director Michael Dunford revealed funding shortfalls are jeopardizing critical recovery efforts.

"Funding shortages threaten our ability to deliver food, medical supplies, and rebuild infrastructure," Dunford stated during the discussion with CGTN host Tian Wei. While acknowledging global partners' swift disaster response, he emphasized that long-term recovery now hangs in the balance without immediate financial commitments.

The crisis highlights growing challenges across Asia where climate-related disasters increasingly strain regional resources. Business professionals tracking Southeast Asian markets note prolonged instability could delay economic revival, while diaspora communities express concerns over families' welfare.

WFP estimates $100 million is urgently needed to sustain operations through 2024. United Nations agencies continue coordinating cross-border relief flights, though logistical hurdles persist in reaching remote areas.
