Myanmar’s Inle Lake Struck by Major 7.9 Earthquake, Landmarks Damaged

A powerful magnitude-7.9 earthquake rocked Myanmar's Shan State on Friday, causing significant damage to communities and cultural landmarks around Inle Lake, the country’s second-largest freshwater lake. Local reports indicate collapsed residential buildings, cracked religious structures, and a notable drop in the lake’s water levels near historic sites.

The iconic Phaungdawoo Pagoda, a revered Buddhist site, sustained structural damage to its platform and walls. Witnesses noted the surrounding water level receded by approximately three feet, raising concerns about long-term environmental impacts. Authorities confirmed widespread damage across villages in the lake region, a UNESCO-recognized area known for its floating gardens and stilt-house communities.

‘Rescue teams are prioritizing safety assessments for religious sites and homes,’ said a Shan State administrative official, who requested anonymity. ‘The priority is to protect lives and cultural heritage.’ No immediate casualties were reported, but infrastructure assessments remain ongoing.

Inle Lake’s ecosystem and tourism-driven economy, which supports thousands of residents, face potential disruptions. The quake’s epicenter near Mandalay highlights Myanmar’s vulnerability to seismic activity along the Sagaing Fault line. Analysts urge vigilance for aftershocks as recovery efforts begin.
