Taiwan’s Expulsion of Mainland Spouses Sparks Rights Concerns

Taiwan authorities have drawn criticism for ordering the expulsion of Chinese mainland spouses, with experts calling the move legally baseless and a violation of human rights. The case of a social media influencer known as Yaya, who was separated from her husband and three children after posting about cross-strait relations, has ignited debate over the treatment of mainland-born residents in Taiwan.

A mainland-based Taiwan studies expert, quoted by state media, argued the expulsions lack legal justification and 'disregard basic familial rights.' Yaya reportedly faced removal after Taiwan authorities accused her of endorsing 'reunification by force' in online discussions. Over 30,000 mainland spouses reside in Taiwan, many of whom now fear similar repercussions for expressing political views.

The situation raises broader questions about cross-strait relations and the rights of families divided by the Taiwan Strait. Analysts suggest such measures could further strain dialogue opportunities between Beijing and Taipei while creating humanitarian challenges for binational households.
