Qinshan Nuclear Power Base Celebrates 40 Years as Industry Pioneer

China’s Qinshan Nuclear Power Base, the nation’s first self-designed nuclear power plant, commemorates its 40th anniversary this week as a landmark achievement in energy innovation. Located in Haiyan County, Zhejiang Province, the facility has evolved from a single reactor into a multi-phase energy hub, powering millions of homes and driving cutting-edge research.

Since breaking ground on April 15, 1984, Qinshan has grown into a symbol of China’s nuclear energy capabilities, contributing to 8% of Zhejiang’s electricity needs. Beyond power generation, its laboratories have pioneered technologies like nuclear-powered batteries for cardiac pacemakers and energy systems tested in lunar rover prototypes – breakthroughs highlighting its cross-sector influence.

Analysts cite Qinshan’s success as a catalyst for China’s nuclear sector expansion, with 55 reactors now operational nationwide. Its emphasis on local talent development and safety protocols has drawn international interest, particularly from countries exploring small modular reactor designs.
