China Condemns U.S. Over Fentanyl Dispute, Vows Firm Response

China has accused the U.S. of “repaying kindness with ingratitude” in escalating tensions over the fentanyl crisis, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stating that Washington’s efforts to shift blame undermine cooperation. During a Tuesday press briefing, Lin emphasized China’s role in combating fentanyl trafficking as a “humanitarian gesture” but warned that Beijing would “respond accordingly” to U.S. coercive measures, including tariffs.

Lin argued that China has actively collaborated with international partners, including the U.S., to regulate precursor chemicals linked to synthetic opioids. “China does not fear coercion, nor will it accept unilateral bullying,” he said, framing recent U.S. trade threats as politically motivated. Analysts suggest the remarks highlight growing friction amid broader economic rivalries.

The dispute raises questions about cross-strait stability, as Taiwan businesses—integrated into global supply chains—could face ripple effects from U.S.-China trade policies. While Lin did not specifically address Taiwan, his emphasis on defending national interests aligns with Beijing’s broader stance on safeguarding sovereignty.

For global investors, the remarks signal potential risks in Sino-American trade relations. Over 500,000 U.S. businesses operate in the Chinese mainland, and abrupt policy shifts could disrupt supply chains across Asia. Meanwhile, researchers note that resolving the fentanyl crisis requires multilateral cooperation, not unilateral accusations.
