China’s UN Envoy Opposes U.S. Tariff Increase

At a press conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, voiced strong opposition to the United States' decision to increase tariffs on Chinese goods. The press conference marked the beginning of China's presidency of the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Fu stated that the U.S. tariff hike violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and undermines the principles of free trade. \"There are no winners in a trade war,\" he emphasized, calling for dialogue and cooperation instead of unilateral measures. Fu urged the U.S. to reconsider its decision and return to negotiations to resolve trade disputes constructively.

The ambassador highlighted the potential negative impact of escalating trade tensions on the global economy, noting that increased tariffs could disrupt supply chains, hurt businesses, and burden consumers with higher prices. He called on the international community to uphold multilateralism and the rules-based international trading system.

China's presidency of the Security Council comes at a critical time, and Ambassador Fu expressed China's commitment to working with all members to address global challenges. He reiterated China's stance on promoting peace, development, and cooperation through multilateral institutions.

The trade dispute between the U.S. and China has raised concerns among investors, businesses, and governments worldwide. Many fear that prolonged tensions could slow economic growth and destabilize markets. Observers are watching closely to see how both countries navigate this complex issue in the coming weeks.
