Vanuatu welcomed 35 tonnes of Chinese aid on Thursday to assist in rebuilding efforts following a powerful magnitude-7.3 earthquake that struck near the capital, Port Vila, on December 17.
The aid was officially handed over during a ceremony at the airport, attended by Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai and Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Li Minggang. The supplies are expected to play a crucial role in supporting communities affected by the disaster.
On December 17, the earthquake caused significant damage in Port Vila, leading to the collapse of several buildings and leaving others structurally compromised. The swift arrival of international assistance highlights the global solidarity with Vanuatu during this challenging time.
