Locals Turn Shifting Sands into Green Oasis in Xinjiang’s Lop County

On the edge of the vast Taklimakan Desert in Lop County, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a remarkable transformation is underway. Amidst the undulating dunes, the sounds of machinery break the desert silence as 40 machines work tirelessly to flatten the shifting sands.

Some 80 kilometers away, around 300 local villagers have joined forces in an ambitious endeavor. Armed with determination and a vision for a greener future, they labor under the desert sun, planting hardy saxaul trees across the leveled sand.

By spring, these resilient trees are expected to take root and flourish, weaving a lush 266-hectare “green carpet” over what was once barren desert. This initiative not only combats desertification but also brings hope and vitality back to the region.
