China Commissions Its First Domestically Built Deep-Ocean Drilling Vessel, Meng Xiang

China has marked a significant milestone in maritime technology with the commissioning of its first domestically designed and built deep-ocean drilling vessel, the Meng Xiang. The vessel was officially put into service on November 17 in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou.

The Meng Xiang boasts impressive specifications, measuring 179.8 meters in length and 32.8 meters in width, with a displacement of 42,600 tonnes. It stands as China’s largest scientific research vessel, capable of reaching a maximum drilling depth of 11 kilometers beneath the ocean’s surface.

Designed for extensive voyages, the vessel has a range of 15,000 nautical miles and can remain self-sufficient for up to 120 days at sea. It accommodates a crew and research team of 180 people, providing a substantial platform for deep-sea exploration and scientific research.

The commissioning of the Meng Xiang signifies China’s growing capabilities in deep-sea exploration and its commitment to advancing maritime science and technology. The vessel is expected to play a crucial role in various fields, including geological research, natural resource exploration, and environmental studies.
