At a United Nations Security Council meeting on Thursday, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, called on the United States to cease actions that may hinder peace efforts in the ongoing Ukraine crisis. As U.S.-led arms transfers to Kyiv continue, Geng emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions to end the conflict.
“We urge the United States not to obstruct peace by escalating tensions through continuous arms deliveries,” Geng stated. He highlighted that increasing military support could prolong the conflict and exacerbate the humanitarian situation in the region.
The meeting also featured remarks from Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Undersecretary-General for Disarmament Affairs. Nakamitsu noted that Ukrainian armed forces continue to receive military support, including heavy conventional weapons. She expressed concern over the use and transfer of cluster munitions, underscoring their indiscriminate nature and potential for widespread environmental contamination.
“The deployment of cluster munitions poses significant risks to civilian populations and long-term ecological harm,” Nakamitsu warned. She called for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian laws and to consider the devastating consequences of such weaponry.
The discussions at the UN highlight the complexities of the Ukraine crisis and the international community’s role in seeking a peaceful resolution. China’s call for restraint reflects its stance on promoting dialogue and negotiations over military interventions.
As the conflict continues, global leaders and organizations remain vigilant in their efforts to mediate and support a path toward lasting peace in Ukraine.
