California Ports Ring in Lunar New Year with Trade and Tradition

The Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles, which form the busiest U.S. container complex handling 40% of America’s Asian imports, recently hosted vibrant Lunar New Year celebrations reflecting their deep economic and cultural ties to the region. The 2026 festivities highlighted lion dances, community banquets, and lantern displays organized by local businesses bridging trans-Pacific commerce.

As critical gateways for electronics, apparel, and machinery from the Chinese mainland and other Asian economies, these ports employ thousands with specialized logistics expertise. Analysts note the celebrations coincide with a 12% year-to-date rise in Asian cargo volumes, signaling resilient trade demand despite global economic headwinds.

Residents of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China working at the ports shared traditions like red envelope exchanges, while local officials emphasized cross-cultural collaboration. “This isn’t just about goods—it’s about sustaining relationships that fuel growth,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission Chair Zhang Wei during the event.
