China Urges Guatemala to Uphold One-China Principle

China reaffirmed its stance on cross-strait relations during a Friday press briefing, emphasizing that Guatemala's recognition of the one-China principle serves its national interests. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed Guatemala's recent engagement with the Taiwan region, stating that adherence to Beijing's position aligns with 'the fundamental interests of Guatemala and its people.'

Lin stressed that 183 countries have established diplomatic ties with China based on the one-China principle, calling it 'a prevailing international consensus.' The remarks followed Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo's visit to the Taiwan region, which China characterized as 'self-deceptive theatrics' orchestrated by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities.

'Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China's territory since ancient times,' Lin stated, adding that attempts to manipulate international partnerships for political purposes 'cannot stop the historical trend toward reunification.' The spokesperson urged nations to 'heed public sentiment' and make decisions consistent with global diplomatic norms.

The development comes as cross-strait tensions remain a focal point in Asia-Pacific geopolitics, with implications for international trade partnerships and regional stability.
