China’s Qingming Holiday Sees 845 Million Trips as Spring Travel Booms

China's Qingming Festival holiday, observed from April 4 to 6, 2026, marked a historic surge in domestic travel as 845.38 million passenger trips were recorded nationwide. The Ministry of Transport reported a 6% year-on-year increase, reflecting renewed enthusiasm for cultural traditions and seasonal tourism.

Road travel dominated with 778.45 million trips, up 5.8% from 2025, while railway journeys rose 8.2% to 57.68 million. Waterway transport saw a notable 9.8% growth to 3.7 million trips, though air travel dipped slightly to 5.5 million trips.

The convergence of tomb-sweeping rituals and regional school spring breaks fueled family-oriented travel. Many residents combined ancestral memorial activities with visits to scenic areas like Jiangsu's tulip fields and Guangxi's terraced landscapes, blending cultural observance with leisure.

Analysts highlight this rebound as a positive indicator for domestic consumption, particularly in rural tourism and short-haul transport sectors. The holiday's timing during peak cherry blossom season further amplified its appeal to both local and international visitors.
