World’s Only Brown Giant Panda Delights in Snowy Play at Qinling Center

In a heartwarming winter spectacle, Qi Zai – the world's sole brown giant panda in captivity – has become an internet sensation after frolicking in fresh snowfall at Shaanxi Province's Qinling Giant Panda Research Center. The rare 15-year-old male panda captivated visitors this week by rolling vigorously in snowdrifts and climbing play structures to coat his distinctive brown-and-white fur in frosty flakes.

Center staff reported Qi Zai appeared particularly energetic during the seasonal cold snap, rubbing his head against snow-covered logs and trees before settling down to methodically shake off the powder and enjoy bamboo treats. His playful antics marked a successful milestone for conservationists working to understand color variations in giant pandas through this unique specimen.

"Qi Zai's winter behavior provides valuable insights into panda adaptation," said lead researcher Dr. Wang Hui. "As climate patterns evolve, observing how these animals interact with seasonal changes helps shape our conservation strategies." The center plans to expand its habitat enrichment programs this year, incorporating more seasonal elements to stimulate natural behaviors.

First discovered in 2009 during a wild panda population survey, Qi Zai remains crucial to genetic research. Scientists believe his rare brown-and-white coloration stems from a unique genetic mutation specific to the Qinling subspecies. The research facility currently hosts 28 giant pandas, with Qi Zai's enclosure drawing particular interest from international zoologists and wildlife enthusiasts.
