China’s Snow Town Transforms into Winter Fairy Tale with Iconic ‘Mushroom Houses’

The Snow Town scenic area in Mudanjiang, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, has become a viral winter destination as its signature snow-capped wooden structures evolve into picturesque 'mushroom houses' this December. Recent heavy snowfall has transformed the landscape into a glowing wonderland, with roofs bearing up to two meters of snow creating the illusion of giant fungal caps against the frosty backdrop.

Local tourism authorities report a 40% increase in visitors compared to last winter season, with many travelers from Southeast Asia and Europe braving sub-zero temperatures to witness the phenomenon. The site's nightly illumination displays, featuring synchronized colored lights reflecting off ice crystals, have drawn particular praise on social media platforms.

This natural architectural marvel occurs annually when northwest winds sculpt snowdrifts around the village's steeply sloped roofs. Hotel operators note full bookings through January 2026, with many guests extending stays to photograph the structures under different weather conditions.

The scenic area's popularity has spurred infrastructure investments totaling ¥320 million ($45 million) this year, including upgraded rail connections from Harbin and new winter sports facilities. Analysts predict the region could attract over 1.2 million visitors during the current winter tourism season.
