Ancient Wonders Come Alive: Shanxi Launches Summer Night Tours

Northern China's Shanxi Province, often called an open-air museum of ancient architecture, is illuminating its cultural treasures after dark this summer. With over 400 historic structures – more than any other Chinese mainland province – Shanxi is extending visiting hours at key sites to blend heritage preservation with modern tourism trends.

Moonlit Pagodas and Living Culture

The 1,000-year-old Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, a masterpiece of Song Dynasty engineering, now welcomes visitors until 10 p.m. in Shuozhou City. As twilight falls, the pagoda's intricate bracketing system becomes dramatically lit, while traditional folk performances bring nearby courtyards to life. "This nighttime experience helps visitors connect with history through multiple senses," says local cultural affairs director Zhang Wei.

Balancing Tourism and Tradition

The initiative comes as Chinese provinces explore innovative ways to boost cultural tourism. Early reports show a 40% increase in evening visitors compared to daytime numbers at participating sites. While extending hours, authorities emphasize using specialized lighting to protect ancient wood structures from damage.

Other participating landmarks include the Hanging Temple of Datong and Pingyao Ancient City, where night markets now feature artisan demonstrations alongside local snacks. Tourism officials confirm plans to expand the program through September, coinciding with autumn cultural festivals across the province.
