At the foot of Mount Fanjing in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, the once rocky hills of Langxi Town are now awash with the golden hues of ripe tangerines. Local farmers are busily harvesting hundreds of hectares of fruit, carefully clipping the tangerines from branches and filling their baskets before transporting them down the mountain to markets across the region.
In the 1990s, Langxi Town faced severe rocky desertification, which hindered economic and social development. The barren terrain posed significant challenges for the predominantly Tujia and Miao communities residing in Yinjiang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County. However, recent years have seen a transformative effort by the local government to combat these environmental issues.
Through initiatives such as reforestation and soil improvement, over 200 hectares of rocky land have been converted into fertile orchards. These efforts have not only revitalized the landscape but also provided sustainable income sources for local farmers. The orchards now yield premium fruits, including tangerines, pomelos, and mandarins, contributing to the region’s economic growth.
“The transformation of the land has changed our lives,” says Li Wei, a local farmer. “We used to struggle with poor soil and little vegetation. Now, the orchards provide us with a stable income and a better future for our children.”
This successful agricultural development serves as a model for other regions facing similar environmental challenges. The integration of ecological restoration with economic development has allowed the community to preserve their natural environment while improving their livelihoods.
As the harvest season peaks, the vibrant orchards of Langxi Town stand as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its people, offering insights into sustainable practices that balance environmental care with economic needs.
