Shuimo Danxia in Lanzhou: A Geological Wonder Dressed in Autumn Green

Formed approximately 150 million years ago, Shuimo Danxia in Lanzhou, northwest China’s Gansu Province, stands as a geological marvel of the Danxia landform. As the beautiful autumn harvest arrives, its red rocks are adorned with a layer of green, as if greeting this wonderful season.

This Danxia landform, originating from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary periods, was shaped by red rock formations during the Himalayan orogeny. Due to the uplift of the earth’s crust, the red sandstone has endured long-term weathering, exfoliation, and water erosion, creating breathtaking landscapes that bear witness to the earth’s monumental changes over millions of years.

Situated on the banks of the Yellow River—China’s second-longest river—and just 13 kilometers from the urban area, Shuimo Danxia has become a major tourist attraction in Lanzhou. Since its trial operation in 2021, it has welcomed over 2.1 million visitors, solidifying its status as a must-see destination for travelers exploring the region.

To achieve a balance between sightseeing and environmental protection, seven viewing platforms have been constructed based on the Danxia landform terrain. These platforms allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty while preserving the delicate ecosystem of the area.
