Nearly two years ago, Dr. Wang Huiting made a life-changing decision. Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of city life, she opened a café in Liyukou, a small village about 40 minutes’ drive from Xi’an, the provincial capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.
“I enjoy the pastoral life here,” Wang shared with a warm smile. “The natural environment is great. I live in a small courtyard house and don’t have to compete with others for elevators every day. Plus, I get along well with local villagers, just like a family.”
A Dream Life in the Countryside
Many might not expect to find a spacious and uniquely designed café nestled in a once impoverished remote village. Wang’s establishment has become a beacon of change since its opening in 2022. Visitors are often surprised to learn about Wang’s background: she holds a Master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design from the University of Nottingham and earned her PhD from a university in Xi’an.
“I think what I’m doing now is more meaningful than designing a large project in the city,” Wang told CGTN. “People’s values are becoming more diversified today.”
Wang represents a growing number of educated entrepreneurs who are returning to rural areas in China, bringing with them new ideas and vitality. Their efforts are transforming local economies and fostering stronger communities.
Revitalizing Rural Communities
The influx of creative entrepreneurs like Wang is breathing new life into Shaanxi’s villages. By establishing businesses and engaging with local residents, they are helping to stimulate economic growth and cultural exchange.
These entrepreneurs are not only pursuing personal fulfillment but also contributing to the broader goal of rural revitalization. Their stories reflect a shift in societal values, where success is not solely defined by urban achievements but also by the positive impact made in rural communities.
As Wang continues to thrive in Liyukou, her journey inspires others to explore opportunities beyond the city limits, embracing the potential that lies within China’s diverse and dynamic rural landscapes.
