Xiang Xiang, the cherished female giant panda born at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo, celebrated her 7th birthday on Wednesday at the Ya’an base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan Province. The festivities drew crowds of visitors, including hundreds who traveled from Japan to join in honoring the beloved panda.

Born on June 12, 2017, Xiang Xiang is the offspring of Shin Shin and Ri Ri, two giant pandas loaned to Japan from China. Her birth was a significant event that captivated audiences in both countries, symbolizing the strengthening bonds through cultural and environmental cooperation. Xiang Xiang became an instant celebrity, attracting millions of visitors during her stay in Japan.

In February 2023, in accordance with the loan agreement, Xiang Xiang returned to China. Since then, she has been residing at the Ya’an base, where she continues to charm visitors with her playful demeanor and endearing presence. Her 7th birthday became a momentous occasion, not just for local visitors but also for the many Japanese admirers who made the journey to witness the celebration.
