As the Duanwu Festival, also known internationally as the Dragon Boat Festival, approaches, the Yunnan Wildlife Park in Kunming is embracing the festive spirit in a unique way. The park’s diverse animal residents are being treated to specially prepared “zongzi,” traditional rice dumplings that symbolize the holiday’s rich cultural heritage.
The zookeepers have crafted these zongzi to suit the dietary needs of each species, turning the annual human celebration into an inclusive feast for the animals. Small-clawed otters, ring-tailed lemurs, orangutans, black swans, and raccoons were among those enjoying the special treats.
“We wanted to share the joy of the Duanwu Festival with our animal friends,” said a spokesperson for the park. “By preparing zongzi suited to their diets, we bring a piece of traditional culture into their lives and offer an enriched experience for both the animals and our visitors.”
The small-clawed otters eagerly grabbed their fish-filled zongzi, while the orangutans enjoyed fruit-packed versions of the delicacy. The ring-tailed lemurs leaped at the opportunity to taste their specially made rice treats, and the black swans gracefully partook in the festive feeding.
The Duanwu Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is a significant cultural event across China, commemorating the ancient poet Qu Yuan. Traditional activities include dragon boat racing and enjoying zongzi with family and friends.
