Fu Bao, the first giant panda born in South Korea, has safely arrived in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The chartered flight carrying the beloved panda landed on Wednesday, marking a significant homecoming for the three-year-old “Princess Fu.”
Upon arrival, Fu Bao underwent customs inspection at the airport before being transported to the Shenshuping Giant Panda Base in Wolong National Nature Reserve for quarantine. Li Guo, deputy director of the base under the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda, shared that they are fully prepared to welcome her with completed resources and facilities.
“We will determine when to introduce Fu Bao to the public based on her adaptation,” Li stated. “Judging from experience, the adaptation period can range from one month to eight months, or even longer.”
Born on July 20, 2020, to Le Bao and Ai Bao—giant pandas leased by China to South Korea in 2016—Fu Bao quickly became a national sensation in South Korea. Fondly referred to as the “top celebrity in South Korea,” she has captivated the hearts of millions over the years.
According to the giant panda research cooperation program, all pandas born overseas are to return to China before reaching four years of age, as they generally reach sexual maturity around that time. Fu Bao’s return signifies a continuation of conservation efforts and international cooperation in preserving this treasured species.
