Wulan Ancient Town in Zhangye, Gansu Province, has been transformed into a luminous wonderland as it prepares for the upcoming Lantern Festival.
The historic town’s streets and buildings are adorned with thousands of colorful lanterns, illuminating the night and attracting visitors from across the region. The Lantern Festival, known as “Yuanxiao Jie” in Chinese, marks the culmination of the Lunar New Year celebrations and will take place on February 24 this year.

“The lanterns bring a festive atmosphere to our town,” said Li Ming, a resident of Wulan Ancient Town. “It’s a time when we come together to celebrate and share our traditions with visitors.”
The Lantern Festival has a history dating back over 2,000 years and is celebrated across China with various activities such as lantern riddles, lion dances, and eating yuanxiao, sweet glutinous rice balls symbolizing reunion.
Local authorities have implemented measures to ensure the safety and enjoyment of visitors, including crowd management and enhanced sanitation protocols.
