China Records Over 273 Million Passenger Trips on Second Day of Lunar New Year Holiday

China’s transport sector handled over 273.75 million passenger trips on Sunday, the second day of the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, marking a significant 22.6 percent increase from the same day last year, according to official statistics.

The majority of these journeys were made by road, with highway traffic accounting for 261.64 million passenger trips, up 21 percent year on year. Railway travel saw a substantial rise of 71.8 percent, reaching over 8.97 million trips. Air travel experienced the highest growth rate, surging 75.3 percent to nearly 2.17 million trips, while waterway passenger trips increased by 42.2 percent to 977,000.

The Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most significant traditional holiday in China and falls on February 10 this year. The holiday period triggers a massive travel rush as people return to their hometowns for family reunions. This year’s travel rush began on January 26 and is expected to continue until March 5.

The significant increase in passenger trips reflects the robust recovery of China’s transport sector and the public’s eagerness to celebrate the Lunar New Year with loved ones after pandemic-related restrictions have eased.
