In the heart of Yuncheng, Shanxi Province, renowned dough sculpture artist Xie Yunxian has unveiled a spectacular 2-meter-high dragon-shaped dough sculpture to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Spending two weeks meticulously crafting the piece, Xie infused the sculpture with traditional auspicious symbols, aiming to convey blessings and good fortune for the Year of the Dragon in 2024. According to the Chinese zodiac, the dragon, or ‘Loong’ in Chinese culture, is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck.

“I wanted to create something that not only showcases the beauty of our folk arts but also brings joy and prosperity to people as we welcome the new year,” Xie shared.

Dough sculpture, a cherished form of folk art, involves molding colorful clay or glutinous rice flour into intricate shapes and styles. Artists like Xie preserve this traditional craft, passing down techniques through generations.

The unveiling of the sculpture has attracted visitors and art enthusiasts eager to witness this fusion of artistry and cultural heritage. As the Chinese New Year approaches, such expressions of creativity highlight the rich tapestry of traditions that continue to thrive in modern China.
