Surge in Cultural and Culinary Travel Bookings in China Ahead of Spring Festival

As the countdown to the Spring Festival accelerates, China is witnessing an unprecedented surge in bookings for cultural and culinary travel experiences. According to data from Meituan and Dianping, two of China’s leading review and booking platforms, advance bookings for travel-related experiences have increased sevenfold compared to the same period last year.

The Spring Festival, also known as the Lunar New Year, is a time of family reunions, traditional festivities, and, increasingly, exploration of cultural heritage and regional cuisines. This year, with eased travel restrictions and a growing appetite for domestic tourism, Chinese travelers are enthusiastically planning trips that combine sightseeing with authentic food experiences.

“We have seen a significant uptick in demand for culinary tours and cultural workshops,” said a spokesperson from Meituan. “Travelers are keen to immerse themselves in local traditions and flavors, making this Spring Festival a boon for the tourism and hospitality sectors.”

Popular destinations include historical cities, rural villages renowned for their traditional crafts, and regions celebrated for their unique culinary offerings. From dumpling-making classes in the north to tea ceremonies in the south, travelers are seeking hands-on experiences that connect them with China’s rich cultural tapestry.

The surge in bookings reflects a broader trend of experiential travel, where tourists prioritize meaningful engagements over standard sightseeing. This shift is not only boosting local economies but also fostering a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity within China.

Industry analysts predict that this momentum will continue beyond the Spring Festival, signaling a robust recovery for the domestic tourism market in 2023.
