When Fang Faming, an advertising executive in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, first witnessed the live coverage of the Dakar Rally on national television in 2004, he was immediately captivated by the stirring scenes of the world’s most grueling long-distance event. As the initial rush of exhilaration subsided, a visionary thought began to take shape in Fang’s mind: Why not bring such an enthralling rally to Xinjiang? With its expansive Taklimakan Desert—one of the largest in the world—and a terrain that encompasses deep canyons and awe-inspiring cliffs, the region seemed tailor-made for such an adventure.
Determined to turn his idea into reality, Fang immersed himself in extensive research and conducted a thorough feasibility study. Recognizing the need for specialized expertise, he reached out to He Junhuai, a seasoned off-road racer, and Su Haobo, a businessman with a passion for off-road motorcycles. Together, they shared a common dream: to create a rally that would not only test the limits of human endurance but also showcase the natural beauty and cultural richness of Xinjiang.
By 2005, their efforts bore fruit with the inauguration of the Taklimakan Rally. Starting from the city of Aksu, the rally covered thousands of kilometers through some of the most challenging terrains in the region, including the heart of the Taklimakan Desert. Over the years, the Taklimakan Rally has grown in stature, attracting competitors from around the globe and earning its place as one of the premier cross-country rallies in Asia.
