Yuyuan Lantern Festival Illuminates Shanghai and Paris for Chinese New Year

Colorful lanterns have lit up both Shanghai and Paris as part of the upcoming 2024 Chinese New Year celebrations.

On Friday, a lantern installation titled “A Night of Fish and Dragon Dance” illuminated Shanghai’s iconic Yuyuan Garden, offering a preview of its annual lantern fair. The festival will officially commence in mid-to-late January 2024 and will last for over 40 days to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

Simultaneously, the Yuyuan Lantern Festival has made its debut in Paris, marking a significant cultural exchange between China and France. The event celebrates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and heralds the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism in 2024. Over 60 large sets of Chinese lanterns and 2,000 traditional lanterns will illuminate Paris until February 25 next year.

The illumination of these lanterns in both cities symbolizes a blend of tradition and modernity, fostering cultural understanding and strengthening ties between China and France. Visitors can expect vibrant displays of artistry, featuring themes of prosperity, harmony, and good fortune associated with the Year of the Dragon.

The Yuyuan Lantern Festival not only brings festive cheer to locals but also attracts tourists and culture enthusiasts from around the world. As Shanghai and Paris shine brightly, the festival highlights the enduring appeal of Chinese cultural heritage on the global stage.
