BASF Launches $10 Billion Green Chemical Site in China’s Zhanjiang

German chemical giant BASF has commenced full operations at its groundbreaking 8.7 billion euro integrated production complex in Zhanjiang, marking its largest single global investment to date. The facility's launch on March 26 aligns with China's ongoing 15th Five-Year Plan priorities of sustainable industrialization and carbon reduction.

Designed as a model of eco-efficient production, the site operates entirely on renewable electricity and employs electric-driven compressors. BASF's Mega Projects Asia President Haryono Lim revealed at Thursday's inauguration: "Our carbon footprint here is already down to 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 – less than half the typical emissions for comparable facilities."

This strategic investment comes as multinational corporations increasingly align with China's green development agenda. The Zhanjiang complex positions BASF to serve growing demand for sustainable chemical solutions across Asian markets while demonstrating large-scale industrial decarbonization.
