China's Five-Year Blueprint Targets Tech Dominance
China has launched its most ambitious innovation roadmap to date through the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), proposing 28 strategic projects across transportation, aerospace, and frontier technologies. The plan, submitted to the national legislature on March 5, 2026, positions artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and space exploration as key drivers of economic modernization.
Transportation and Aviation Leap Forward
The CR450 bullet train prototype – designed to operate at 450 km/h – will undergo final testing this year before commercial deployment. Aviation projects include mass production of the C919 narrow-body jet and development of the C929 wide-body aircraft, with plans to test the CJ-1000A commercial jet engine by 2028. The blueprint also outlines specialized aircraft variants for high-altitude operations.
Frontier Technology Breakthroughs
China aims to achieve first-stage engineering validation of controllable nuclear fusion by 2030 while accelerating brain-computer interface applications and gene therapy research. The plan prioritizes domestic production of advanced semiconductor chips and deployment of humanoid robots in manufacturing sectors.
Space and Deep-Sea Exploration
Space initiatives include developing reusable heavy-lift rockets, constructing an international lunar research station, and launching planetary probes. A deep-sea "space station" project features in parallel with next-generation resource extraction technologies for underwater energy reserves.
