Japanese Startup’s Third Rocket Launch Fails Shortly After Liftoff

Space One, a Japanese aerospace startup, faced another setback this week as its Kairos rocket veered off course and crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday. The incident marks the company's third failed attempt to become the first private Japanese firm to deploy a satellite into orbit.

Footage from the Wakayama coastal launch site showed the 18-meter rocket ascending smoothly into clear skies at 11:10 a.m. local time before losing power mid-flight. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle enter an uncontrolled spin before disappearing from view. Authorities are investigating the crash site and potential environmental impacts.

"We're analyzing flight data to understand the anomaly," a Space One representative stated, emphasizing their commitment to Japan's growing private space sector. The failed launch comes as Japan aims to strengthen its commercial space capabilities amid rising competition from global players like SpaceX and India's Skyroot Aerospace.

Industry analysts note that while setbacks are common in rocket development, the repeated failures highlight technical challenges facing new entrants. The Japanese government has invested ¥50 billion ($330 million) this year in private space initiatives, aiming to capture 5% of the global satellite launch market by 2030.
